I never use the rear LCD for viewing the settings during regular shooting. That's what the top LCD is for. It's just the smallest models don't have any top LCD, so they have to use the rear one for everything. Then, and only then, is it smart to have a sensor which sees your head being in proximity of the eyepiece.
The rear display has its virtues, like if you have poor eyesight, the camera is high up or low down, when using live view (obviously) and so on. But not for everyday shooting. The top LCD doesn't need any backlight in normal daylight either, so it consumes far less power too.
