Always use the lens hood.

I think one can ususally skip the step of the hacksaw cuttiing into the filter ring. OP already has the glass removed, just use pliers to bend the filter ring inward and off the lens threads.
Then in the future ALWAYS USE THE LENS HOOD. If the lens hood had been in place the filter would not have been broken in the drop. And if the 24-70/2.8L is mk I, the hood would also protect the extending inner barrel from damage.
And (IMHO, YMMV) never there's usually no reason to have a UV filter on anyway. )
