many people looking for 70-300 becasue they need 300mm. then they should get a 300/4 to have a one-stop faster lens with better image quality. but Canon's current 300/4LIS is old and isn't very good IMHO, and you will have a similar lens if you have a new 70-200/2.8LIS2 with a new 1.4x extender.

people may actually need 400mm and consider 100-400LIS or 400/5.6L. these may well beyond their budget but I have seen too many people got theirs eventually.

they got lots of less quality photos with a lower quality lens and they wasted their money by buying one.
