Dropped EF 24-70 f/2.8L - Dented UV Filter Stuck

A month ago while traveling overseas my new Canon 5D mk III (with 24-70 lens attached) fell out of my camera bag and hit the ground.  I was horrified, it hit the pavement lens first which damaged the lens cap and shattered the B+W lens filter.  Luckily the 24-70 seems to be fine.

However, after removing the glass from the shattered UV filter I've not been able to remove it from my lens.  I think it's because it's been slightly dented from the impact of the fall.  I bought some filter pliers from B&H but without success.  I've also tried setting it on a rubber mat and twisting it also without success.

Now I'm thinking I need to send it in the Canon, but that may get expensive. Any other suggestions? I don't want to risk damaging the lens by using brute force.

Thanks!

Gary
