I do not use Carbonite, but think the main problem with any "cloud" storage is upload speed. I once calculated that it would take over a year of continuous 24 hours/day, seven days/week to upload all my files. Also, what happens to your data if the Carbonite company goes out of business?
I think a good alternative is a web-hosting plan. For about the same cost you can get the storage plus your own web-site.
