The Panasonic X900 was what I chose when faced with the same choice. I could have payed a bit more for the CX7xx line or the Canon G10, but most consider the X900 sharper, and it is much cheaper. Right now you can buy it for $729, while the Sony CX580v is $798. The Pany is slightly less sensative than the G10 or CX7xx, meaning you cannot overexpose lowlight as well, but it is very good at controling noise in lowlight, and is razor sharp in good light. They are all good options, but the sony is known to have too limited of exposure controls and the canon is known to be noticeably softer. I pondered all three brands, plus JVC, and I ended up with the X900. Couldn't be happier.
