Strange SB800 behavior, looking for help

Hey guys,
I've been a long time SB800 user but haven't really been using my second flash lately. The last couple of times I've pulled out my secondary SB800 it has been dead as a door nail. I'm not surprised by that, even Eneloops lose their charge after a while. However, when I've put in different batteries nothing has happened. Tonight, for example, I put in 5 charged batteries and got no response. I then left it and went for dinner. When I returned from dinner, it started right up, test flashes worked fine. Turned unit off and on several times. I pulled off the fifth battery compartment and everything seems fine with just the four batteries. It seems to be behaving as if a capacitor is dead and is taking a while to charge up from zero. I can't see these things using the capacitor for anything but flash power. Unless there is a secondary internal battery or capacitor for the electronics I can't get my head around this.
Any similar experiences or insights that you all might have will be appreciated.
Thanks.
