I've used dd on GNU/Linux to do migration to new disks or SSDs and it works great if you use it with great care. I've also used it to copy partition tables and boot records to fix problems that made a disk unbootable. It's easy to make mistakes with it, though and its use is better left at computer experts (I do programming too and I've got a Bachelor's in computer science, hehe). https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Disk_Cloning
