If you are looking for a server with explicit ZFS support, NAS4Free is a good way to go.

If you want to store your data without having to worry about hardware failure and a plain old RAID will be ok for you, then also have a look at OpenMediaVault: http://www.openmediavault.org/

I tried both and decided to go with OMV since it has exactly the plugins I was looking for.

A good way to test your future system is to just install the OS on a virtual machine (e.g. Virtual Box) add some virtual harddisks and see for yourself what suits you better. And if you are feeling fance, you could remove one disk from the virtual system to see how the OS handles it. When I did so, both NAS4Free and OMV just continued working just fine. And when I "put back in" the virtual disk, it was resynchronized and everything was back to normal. A-Ma-Zing!
