Surely you miss an important point. There is no need to fine tune at all if the camera and lens are faultless and the problem is a test target which fools the autofocus system into focusing at the wrong distance.

Nikon have a section in every DSLR camera instruction book and links on the web to help explain what targets are likely to fool the autofocus system, including even autofocus confirmation when the subject is not in focus.
