If you can wait (and if there's really an issue with the AF), it's likely Fuji will release a firmware update to improve the situation.
I agree now with some of the other posters, this lens is sharper than the 18mm. I spoke too hastily.
Yes, you should find it to be quite a bit better. The 18mm was optically the weakest of the range.
If you had AF and IQ issues, the most likely explanation would be that you had a bad copy (decentered, or something else). It might still be worth running a battery of lens tests.
