Another alternative to Swype is SwiftKey for Android. It's available via Google Play.

True, but sometimes I think I am over the correct key, but am apparently slightly to the right, and get the next letter over, so it still can take a little getting used to being centered over the correct key, though some phones are likely better than others, and I suspect tablets are easier than phones, with their larger on-screen keyboards. With phones, switching to landscape can also help.
As another person mentioned, the Swype keyboard is very nice: It does regular typing and swype style typing. I use the latest version of the Swype keyboard on my Android phone, though you have install it from the Swype web site since it is not in Google Play. http://www.swype.com/
