Suggestions on a camera for ice hockey and soccer games

As Julio said, either camera is fine. However, you should be aware of two  additional pieces of information.

1. You will need to get a decent telephoto/zoom in the neighborhood of 70-200; 300 F4 -6.3 in order to get good  images  in low light. The kit lens that comes with the cameras will not do the job. 
2. The D5000 had been replaced by the D5100 in 2010. In turn, it has been replaced by the D5200 this year. However you can get a new D5100 for 500 body only or 600 with a kit lens. The D 7000 is also being sold to close out (rumor). It is available with kit lens, for less than 1200.
