A tweak of the levels does it, I think, just to beef up the blacks and clean the highlights a bit. All highly subjective, of course.

While these photos can certainly be fixed in post, that does not change the fact that they were overexposed. A quick histogram check while shooting would have easily confirmed that the image was exposed to the right.
I'm a really big fan of checking histograms to confirm my exposure. It is a great tool to use.
