Your question indicates that you haven't read, or understand, the manual. Can you not install the CD or download it from the Canon site?

MACRO is a setting where you can get the camera in very close. Less than 1 cm when in a wide angle setting. Click the flower icon on the 4 way controller, then click it again to get it into 'Macro'. Anything over 19 inches can be done without 'macro' where getting back off the subject has an advantage. Also there is a TC-- 'Tele Converter' (1.5 and 2 X ) available in the menu's which can be used, in addition to the  zoom range.
