how does it work ?

Today, while cleaning the inner life of my A55, looking at the exposed sensor, I started thinking about what I had seen many times before, but without engaging my mind: why is the sensor exposed ? I really was expecting the shutter curtain to cover it up. Squeezing the "trigger", I could see briefly the two curtain parts zipping by the sensor, exposing it again at the end of the action.  Why is the shutter not covering up the sensor ? Is the camera, with lens removed, mirror up, not in it's "normal" configuration, perhaps for the purpose of cleaning ? Silly questions ? What do I miss ?
