You might want to start out with birds in parks and the like which will let you get closer than totally wild birds. Go for larger birds like swans rather than small birds.
Other possibilities are birds on a bird feeder (but you will need to be within about 10ft), a bird of prey centre, an aviary or somewhere where you can photograph large flocks of birds.

I did try a lil bit of Bird shooting, but what I am finding difficult is getting a focus lock on the bird when in flight...
