Regretting buying this 14mm now that I got it

Interesting - I'd say you have the only poor reaction to the 14mm I've seen

I'd put it up there with the 35mm and definitely better than the 18mm

Even wide open it's good

Worth another look to see if another lens gives you a better result - I guess it's possible that you may have a defective unit
