I agree with your second point of using manual mode. I don't agree with your first comment. You don't really need distance information to get good flash exposures. Using TTL you should be able to get good exposures. The bigger issue with manual lenses is that if you need to use flash then are you really able to manually focus the lens that well?

You are wrong. TTL needs subject distance, focus distance and other info to work. It does not work with manual lenses. What could work is the Auto setting, which basically let's the flash measure thise things with its internal sensors, not the camera's. I don't really know if it works, but theoreticaly could. TTL does not.
BS. Believe what you want. We are not going to agree. I can stick a manual lens on my D800 and with a SB-800 set in TTL mode I get near perfect exposures consistently. I actually do it.
