Ron,

I agree with you about the sales potential of such a lens, although I would have a difficult time justifying its purchase since I already own and love the DA*300. Unlike you, I use the DA*300 primarily for shooting birds, but I also understand its limitations as far as distance is concerned. The point you made regarding Sigma lenses and their screw-drive noise also is spot on. I can get relatively close to owls and hawks without worrying about startling them with the noise of a loud screw-drive lens.

As for the 560, I don't understand some objections that have been raised. I have not seen those supposed images posted from RH's site (not interested in adding to his hit count), but I am familiar with what an excellent telescope lens can produce. Last year I purchased a Televue 85 for my astrophotography, but I also have used it for some bird shots. This is a 600mm f/7 lens and two of my all-time favorite Great Egret shots were taken with it:

So I have some hope that the 560 will prove to be an outstanding lens. But since it is f/5.6, it must be Dead Solid Perfect at f/5.6 to be accepted. I think the price expectations for the 560 were unrealistically low, fueled in part by wishful thinking and part by the price of the 500 f/4.5. But the 500 f/4.5 is an 8 year old lens priced the same for k-mount w/o HSM as the [cns]-mount versions with HSM. I suspect if Sigma gets around to updating this lens like they did the 50-500, its price would rise to something closer to the 560 price (they upped the price of the new 50-500 by 50% when it came out). As for MFD, if someone is routinely shooting subjects that are 20 ft or closer, then I would strongly recommend they shoot with a DA*300. It has plenty of magnification for such distances and is much easier to move around.

I don't have the money to buy a 560 and I doubt I will any time soon, so I will continue shooting silently with my K5+DA*300. Occasionally I will add my 1.7AFA to get closer like I did this morning for this sleepy owl:

But I would have enjoyed shooting this owl with the 560 instead.
