That's changing a bit. Factory work pays quite well in China these days. It's not unusual for a factory worker to be paid 3 or 4 times as much money as an office worker, even though the factory doesn't require college.

They don't have unions, but they don't need them as much as they would in the US. The competition in much of the country is fierce and employees will just not show up at work if they find a better job. The weeks following major holidays tend to be unproductive as many of the workers don't bother to come back to work for the same firm having been head hunted by a different factory.

Still, there are definitely plenty of reasons to avoid the products. Workers typically will work 10 days in a row before getting a few days off. And labor conditions are still not what they are in more developed places.
