Or, they think the next DX generation needs to be 24MP and 8fps and EXPEED can't do that yet with low readout noise so they're working on the next iteration of EXPEED that can solve that and that has taken longer than desired.
Nope - the FX line has solved that for the most part. Also Nikon uses a customized Milbeaut processor and that recent edition as of 2011 has a significant gain in processing power. So they probably have enough for a good frame rate at 24MP. Heck the D5200 does 5 FPS with what is probably the older version Milbeaut CPU.
What Nikon product shows that they can do 24MP at 8fps? I'm not ware of any.
I'm not saying it can now, I'm saying its quite possible to do given the performance of the newer cpu cores.
Or they're truly just clueless and some brain dead marketing/product management folks just thought all D7000 and D300 owners would flock to the D600 and replace most of their lenses and only now have they discovered that's not true and they're in emergency planning mode to figure out what the heck to do.
I don't think Nikon would be quite that brain dead. But given the lack of development on the DX Lens front I wouldn't put it past them. Concentrating all their resources on expanding a small part of their market doesn't on the face of it seem good business. However perhaps they think that the D600 will quickly iterate down to the $1500-1700 mark (its been sold already for under $2000 with a lens) which would tend to impact the D300s replacement market segment. That may force the D300s replacement into marginal profitability shortly after introduction. So that may be a quandary they are facing. But this quandary would only exist if Nikon thought the best way to answer the coming smaller mirrorless high end competitor's APSC cameras would be with the larger FF system.
But, D600 and D400 are NOT really after the same buyers.
Back when introduced that statement would have been correct - maybe perhaps not now. If the prices are the same the market may choose the FF over the APCS. The purpose of the APCS when introduced, was to offer something at a cost consumers could afford. If the price was pretty much the same Economists would refer to the APCS as an inferior product. Not inferior in the technical sense but in the economic sense from the market perspective - just like taking the bus is regarded as an inferior product to taking a car.
While they are not that different in price (assuming a $1500-1700 price for a D400), a DX buyer who wants D600 features would generally be happy with a D7000 (since they have similar build and features).
I don't agree that a DX buyer who wants D600 features would generally be happy with a D7000.
A D400 buyer simply isn't interested in a D600 because it doesn't do what a D400 does (8fps, top-end AF, reach, full viewfinder with existing DX lenses).
A D400 doesn't do anything yet. But there is no technical reason a D600 type of camera couldn't offer what you say. The EVF is pretty much here to stay and its less expensive and allows for a FPS higher speed - the mechanical issues with the mirror as sidestepped. If all that comes to pass - and it will then a FF will offer pretty much everything you mentioned. Including crop mode for your DX lenses.
So, while stupid buyers might not know the difference, many of those still shooting with a D300 know they want the D400 feature set, not the D600 feature set. If you shoot action with a D300, you're not going to think a D600 is going to improve your shooting unless you only shoot really low light, but if you only shoot really low light, you probably already had a D700, not a D300.
See above - a FF at 1500-2000 is eminently likely. With the features you mentioned. With an EVF that would be pretty darned good.
While they are losing sales right now because lots of us are ready to buy something if they make what we would be willing to buy (so we're not spending until they do), Canon isn't putting the competitive hurt on them in that area either so maybe there was some dSLR group-think on not paying attention to quality APS-C and only now are they both discovering that was a mistake.
Canon may be thinking the same as Nikon. That there is a disruptive technology or a cost breakthrough with FF that would make APSC type cameras a non cost effective or less desirable format. We know that the EVF costs less than the prism type OVF. Suppose a 6D like camera is around the corner but with a EVF? Think $1700 on introduction. That would be about the introduction price of the 7D. Or think D600 with EVF. Now take $200 buck of the $1999 price of the D600 with a lens offer that occurred in December - say 1799 with a lens. Does a D300s DX type replacement at $1500 without lens make sense?
So maybe the near future for Nikon and Canon is APSC mirrorless to about the $1200 price point (body only) and FF above. Almost all EVF. Then the current affairs may make sense.
There still isn't a decent solution below the D4 for those who shoot action. That's a glaring hole. This isn't only about offering cameras at each price point - Nikon also needs to meet the needs of different types of shooters and right now they have nothing for the action shooter who can't or won't buy a D4.
The ability to have a high FPS rate is addressable in a low cost FF. I'm not thinking a D4 is the answer. But I bet a FF EVF along the lines of the D600 or 6D with a higher frame rate and 7D type or D7000 type or OMD/GH3 type of AF will shortly exist.
