Coming from the Canon world, I always found Canon lenses were just a little tougher and had better quality control than the aftermarket brands.  Nikon, however, appears to have some quality issues, for example focus motors that fail.

On the other side is the aftermarket companies, Tamron, Sigma and Tokina, which have all shown steady improvement over the years.  I would not hesitate to buy lenses from any one of them, after doing due diligence research.  Typically, an aftermarket lens will have a slight disadvantage in focus speed and corner sharpness, for a HUGE reduction in cost.  Today's current generation of aftermarket lenses typically beat yesterday's generation of factory lenses.  In a few cases, the aftermarket lenses are even better...for example Sigma's 35mm F1.4.
