Are you concerned about Nikon longterm?

first, cameras are very discretionary:  nowadays most everyone owns one or more cameras, not mentioning the camera on their phone.  So no one needs to buy a new camera.  So in tougher economic times, nothing happens.

second, cameras on phones have already reached quite a decent level.

- this makes compact cameras largely obsolete except for a few niches such as superzoom or tough models.

- but not just that:  it also makes DSLRs obsolete in many situations.  If I go on a mountain I can take decent photos with my iPhone, or I can bother with my DSLR its bulk and its weight and in phase detection AF mode it often will be sub-par for landscapes, and the bulk and weight will prove very bothersome and limit my flexibility.

and current and future developments will see phones with cameras that can zoom a bit, and that's before we start mentioning all the editing and sharing possibilities without needing to have to go sit in front of a computer.  So the future looks even tougher for camera makers.

So it's not just Nikon's fault - it seems to be that they're doing the best they can in a market whose fundamentals are looking very bad, and whose short-term prospects are also bad.

Given this, economic logic would indeed suggest that over time, the least bad companies might end up buying some assets from the companies in worst shape.
