consider reading the support support article by thom hogan ... it has a lot of good advice regarding choosing a tripod and head ...
having bought the g-20 bundled with the n-2004, i realize that you should buy the biggest ball diameter you can afford ... even with the tension knob, i find that i fiddle with the g-20 head (1.4 in. ball) more than i'd like ... i'd probably go for an acratech, markins, kirk, or rrs head if i had to do it all over again ...
regarding the promaster tripods or similar ... consider the maximum height ... will you have to bend over to look through your viewfinder? also, 5 leg segments are also much less stable than 4 or 3.
whatever works for you ...
