Lens Hoods: Needed these days?

Just did some quick testing using the 14/2.5, 20/1.7, 12-50/3.5-6.3, and Nikon E 50/1.8. OM-D body (in case that makes a difference).

Putting the sun at an acute angle, one where the lens hood would block the light from striking the lens. I let it strike the lens for a shot, and then blocked it for the next. Absolutely no difference. No flare, no change in contrast, no change in saturation.

Are lens hoods no longer required?

Modern lens magic? Software magic?

Poor testing procedure?

Just an old horse asking. Dropping the lens hoods makes these lenses fit in a pocket very easily. I'd never considered it before.
