What's the BEST SOOC nikon dslr?

He doesn't need high MP, don't use RAW software, want't to continue using his AF-D lenses BUT wouldn't mind getting a camera that does not have the built-in motor, he does have a SB900 flash. Him and i have heard that within the last couple of years the colors have changed, in skin tones and color overall, but Is hard for me to recommend another camera because i have only owned three DSLR bodies, the D60 (for one day because of such small view finder), the D200 and the D7000.

I know MANY of you have owned multiple cameras throughout all these camera changes, and would appreciate your thoughts about what YOU like about previous generations Nikon DSLRs, not so much the "technology" aspect of a body, but the bottom line, the "photos" themselves.
