How good is iPhoto editing software, comparatively speaking?

I have not used iPhoto for a few years.  I uninstalled it from my system.  I use Photo Ninja or Capture NX2 for RAW conversion and if any other adjustments need to be done I will use LR4 with plugins.

I tend to be a minimalist as far as filing photos.  I file by year, month, and camera type and then add sub categories of family, travel, animals, etc. I generally keep only the files I am working on during any given month on my main SSD drive and everything else goes on two backup 500GB externals.

iPhoto was ok, but not much better than opening and making minor corrections in preview. I generally shoot in RAW + jpg.
