Tokina 17-35mm with a 77mm polarizer?

Hello all,
I am planning to get a Tokina 17-35mm for my Nikon D600, but I have notice it has a 82mm filter thread. Since it has a rather small front element, I was wondering if using a step-down ring for a 77mm polarizer on it would be okay, or would it cause some sort of vignetting at the widest focal length? Has anyone got any experience with this particular case?
