Is a protection plan worth it?

Is purchasing a protection plan beyond an included 1 year limited warranty worth it?

How much is reasonable to pay? What percentage of the main purchase is alright to sink back into a protection plan?

I know there's lots of discussion about this and how it might be a waste, but I'm new to the $600-$1,000 price level of cameras and was wondering if they are very realiable or if a little added protection would be nice.

I am looking at purchasing either a NEX-5R or NEX-6 soon. On the Sony website they offer these protection plans... (NOTE: plans start from day of purchase so overlap the 1 year limited warranty)

2-year Service Plan for Cameras and Camcorders $59.99 +

+ $79.993-year Service Plan for Cameras and Camcorders

4-year Service Plan for Cameras and Camcorders $99.99 +

  • Benefits:
    • Repair performed by Sony-authorized technicians, using Sony-authorized parts
    • No estimates, shipping costs or deductibles
    • Lightning/power surge protection
    • No lemon policy
    • Coverage begins on date of product purchase

2-year Service Plan with Accidental Damage for Cameras and Camcorders $99.99 +

3-year Service Plan with Accidental Damage for Cameras and Camcorders $129.99 +

4-year Service Plan with Accidental Damage for Cameras and Camcorders $159.99 +

  • Benefits:
    • (EVERYTHING LISTED ABOVE) plus...
    • Protection against accidents such as drops and spills from day one

Any of them worth it? Other thoughts? Thanks

* And does anyone know if the kit lens would be included in these plans?
