So, would you say that the in-camera converter, besides its design, delivers excellent RAW-converted JPEG images, better than shooting straight JPEG and better than using any other computer-based S/W converter, without artifacts present?

The in-camera RAW converter gives excellent output EQUAL to the JPEGS if the settings of the jepgs are 100% correct at time of shooting. The beauty or potential beauty of this converter is that it allows you to go back to the time of shooting and change all the settings. Then you hit OK and out pops a jpeg that is just as if you shot it at the time of shooting.

The in-camera converter is like an ultra flexible way to shoot jpegs. It cannot do what something like ACR can do on the computer, but it can do a lot and could be a very viable way to convert RAW files if it were not so poorly designed. I love to experiment with the film simulation settings. Try converting image #45, 3 or 4 times changing the film simulation settings. Just doing this will make you want to smash your camera against the wall. Absolutely brutal design.

"Equal" to JPEGS? Then, why bother? JPEGS are full of artifacts to the point that the image is completely distorted as if you have applied a special filter.
