In a nutshell:

The 12-50mm is the Swiss army knife, the most versatile ever-ready lens for M43 or in fact for any other camera systems, ready for just about any common needs, super wide, tele, macro, video, whether it rains or shines. This is a good lens to have on the OMD E-M5, even if you have other lenses.

The 14-42mm is cheaper, smaller, lighter, prettier, and I suspect a tiny bit better in IQ. A good lens to have for light cameras like the PM2 or E-PL5.

Both are really fast in AF and fully compatible with no side-issues whatsoever when used on Olympus cameras, and therefore safer than Panasonic lenses.
