Sorry to hear about your lens problem.

Sorry also to advise you of bad news but your experience with the 28-70 is probably related to a failing/failed focus drive motor within the lens.  I have the same lens with exactly the same symptoms as you describe.

On investigation I have found that this type of failure is well known with the Nikkor 28-70 and many lenses suffer from it and has been mentioned a number of times here at DPR.

The repair cost here in Australia was estimated at approx AU$600.

I chose not to repair the lens and instead got a new Tamron 24-70 f2.8 which I am very happy with it's performance, particularly the VR capability.

Not sure what I will do with my 28-70 f2.8 Nikkor.  No doubt about it delivering fantastic image quality but it is now a high cost not very useful manual focus lens.

I advise you to try to get your money back from whoever sold you the lens as obviously it is faulty.
