If you don't have three copies of vital digital files, you don't have adequate backup (my own personal rule). For things that matter, I have the data burned to a DVD and two HDDs with one copy always off site.

A couple of points to consider:
There are warnings from IT types that hard drives that sit for years without being powered up will be very prone to mechanical failure, so best to exercise them periodically.

When buying HDDs for backup, some suggest NOT buying multiple copies of the same model from the same vendor in the same time frame. Imagine the poor fellow who bought himself a few IBM "Deathstars" for his backup duties.
