I'm sure there is a good technical reason that we can't have a selectable PDAF / CDAF option outside of Live View. Not being such a technical minded person though I'd be interested to see a brief explanation in easy to understand terms!
In the meantime, I might try using the tripod a bit more with the 300mm + TC in Live View and see how I get on.
