B) I'm surprised that the 18-135 appears to surpass the 55-300 here. I love my 18-135, but my DAL 55-300 would do a little better job at 135mm.
I posted a few full resolution test shots, 18-135 vs 55-300 and yes, my 55-300 is a touch better than my 18-135, for corner sharpness and CA/PF. They are so close that you have to peep hard at 100% to tell. Both have very good colour and contrast for a zoom. The IQ differences don't matter much to me, although I definitely prefer the 18-135 bokeh. Note that the 18-135 was wide open for my tests, and the 55-300 was stopped down to match apertures.

I get irritated by the dismissive comments the 18-135 gets, vs. the lavish praise heaped on the 55-300 on this board. Most of the detractors haven't used the 18-135, they've only read the terrible review at PZ. As an actual owner and experienced user of both, I can say the 18-135 is underrated and the 55-300 is overrated. I almost always carry the 18-135, the 55-300 is usually left at home in favour of a 300mm prime.
