OK so it's not so much about technology or physics more about the cost of a full frame sensor and consumer demand.

Are all retractable lenses "crappy"?. Other film compacts like the Contax T2 had a small, retractable lens that was highly regarded and people were happy to pay a premium for these cameras...in the day. Infact they still fetch a decent price. I presume like most technology the costs of a full frame sensor will go down over time too. Remember how much flat screen plasma TV's were?
