Why are FF camera bodies so large?

Full frame cameras like D800 or 5d3 are quite large. But the RX1 is very small, and it's also FF.

Do big FF cameras contain components with larger physical dimensions that require a bigger housing than APS-C or m43 cameras? If so how can the RX1 be so small? What physical components would it be missing?
