It's not of much interest to me ( i.e. the formula ) but it may be what you're looking for. Note that I think it went through a few revisions during that post, so maybe the OP for that post would be best to ask ( by message ).

I would caution beginners to note that the overuse of extreme background blur can be just as bad as not enough.  And also that different lenses have different subjective blur qualities, so not all blurring with the same numerical value is necessarily as nice.
