This has always bugged me too and this thread caught my eye even though I have a NEX-6.  It turns out, though, that on the 6 you can program the AEL button to do the MF assist.  You're right, having MF Assist at the top (in what turns out to be an even better position on the body than softkey A) makes a *world* of difference using legacy glass in combination with focus peaking and/or MF assist.
