I have the 12-50 and the 4/3 edition of the 14-42, which is similar to the µ4/3 version.

Optically I don't find them very different and the µ4/3 14-42 definitely has a size advantage when stowing the camera. Focal length aside, they're in the same ballpark WRT image quality.

Howerver, the 12-50 has huge advantages in utility. It's weatherproof, just like the camera. It has a metal mount flange, not plastic. It's a little longer and a lot wider (those two millimeters make a world of difference). It has a very useful macro mode and it has a slick power zoom, which is very important for video.

I'd get the 12-50.
