Black & White workflow, im not sure!!!!

i posted this on the black & white photography forum but got no replies, can anyone on here advise please:
hypothetically speaking, please imagine if you shot mainly images that you wanted to be finished as black & white images, you always shoot in RAW, and your available pp software is nikon view nx2 and ACDSee pro 6.
i am confused about how to create a sort of standard workflow, i seem to jump about between the two softwares but i am really unsure what to do first, and if this should always be done before that etc.
i like quite high contrast images, and am guilty of perhaps having too much sometimes.
i did read somewhere that they should be processed in colour and changed to b&w towards the end, is this right??
i normally convert to b&w straight away using the b&w option in pro 6 before i alter anything at all.
a little guidance on here or a recommendation of a book that explains the process would be very welcome.
