So your expected to pre-measure everything to be able to do it manually with a slider function or what? In what way is that possibly better than peaking?
And if I'm doing a run nd gun documentary style shoot, I'm expected to know how every shot is going to go and have it all preset before hand? I'm sorry but that's just stupid, I need to be able to react to what's happening infront of my, and I don't trust my camera to make the decision of how to react (and never will, no matter how fast or otherwise with autofocus is).
As for you last example focus peaking would help. As something comes into the shot you simply turn the ring gently and watch the plane of focus move forwards (or backward) until it is on the intended subject.
You are telling the camera what to focus on with the live view and touch screen. There is no need to determine what range to focus through beforehand.
I don't see what you are not getting? It is the same as manually focusing. However, instead of using your eye to to determine when the focus is in the correct position the camera will determine that. You simply tell it what should be in focus and when it should be in focus with the touchscreen.
Nothing could be easier than that once they get it to reliably work in that manner.
So you have to jab at the touch screen disturbing the camera (assuming you can get to the touch screen and not using the viewfinder) and then deal with whatever focus speed the camera sees fit, probably with a little jerk at the end as it overshoots to confirm sharpness?
You can do that anyways, and I don't see how focus peaking isn't better, unless you have the sight of an 80 yr old.
Huh? Why wouldn't you just adjust the focus ring until the peaking was visible on the area you wanted in-focus? The press the shutter and take the picture.
Where did all this poking at touch screens come from?
That's what I'm suggesting you would do (apart from talking about movies, not stills), it was mpg suggesting that touch screen input was the way forward.
