Nice work, Howard. The 45 -- is that the Oly 45 or the Panny 14-45?
Regarding the background, in PhotoLine, I would just use the smart lasso to select around the dog and the frame to select the background, then with the selection active, use the Histogram tool to darken it all down. Or I might use contrast and brightness -- reducing them both.
Another step might be to use the water drop tool to just gently smooth it all out a bit -- not totally so that it looks fake, but just to take the edges off it.
Some people blur the background and achieve a very nice result; I don’t know what it is with me but whenever I try to blur the background I just get a mess.
