How good is iPhoto editing software, comparatively speaking?

I have an August '12 iMac with the latest iPhoto updates.
I am an amateur photographer, so we are talking strictly a hobby, for me. It seems I can do a lot of things within iPhoto (editing).
How good, or useful, is it compared to "real" editing software (eg, Aperture and the such)?
