What Second Monitor for Lightroom?

Well..... I've tried to go Laptop-HDMI  to HDMI/Displayport Adapter-Monitor and it doesn't work.  It might be a faulty adapter but I can't tell for sure other than to try another which I have not been able to do.  I have found some info that some monitors have issues with auto-sensing a connection in a scenario like this but have not had success trying to force the connection in some manner.

I can use Laptop-HDMI to HDMI-HDTV and Laptop-VGA to VGA-Monitor and my Catalyst software auto senses the connection so I assume it is something to do with the adapter and Displayport.
