I am thinking of upgrading the standard Canon 18-55 kit lens to something of better quality and possibly a little more reach.
Current camera is a 450D (will replace in time but staying with a 'crop'); lenses owned 55-250; 10-20
Looking for advice on what to upgrade to
in my experience, standard zoom users typically go one of two ways -- more zoom range or more low-light capability ...
for the low light standard zoom route -- canon, sigma, and tamron all make a 17-5xmm f/2.8 standard zoom lens which is the widest aperture you can find on an aps-c zoom lens ... this will allow for better low-light performance and better subject isolation and background blurring ...
for the zoom range route -- canon makes a 15-85mm which is almost wide angle and almost telephoto ... people love this lens because it's suited for well-lit situations like day hiking or touristy stuff ...
of course, you can go even further down either path ... a tamron superzoom 18-270mm does very poorly in low-light situations and an f/1.4 low-light prime lens cannot zoom at all ...
different strokes for different folks ... for my first lens, i went the low-light route ... never looked back ...
