(i) Bright high quality walk-about. It seems that the main candidates here are the panasonic 20mm f1.7, panasonic Leica 25mm f1.4 and the Olympus 17mm f1.8. The 17mm is new and there don't seem to be many reviews, but if its sharp it might be the best compromise. I used the Panny 25mm before and its excellent but prefer a bit wider. Lastly the 20mm is supposed to be really sharp but an older design lens which does not autofocus that fast ? (just what I have heard, please correct if wrong)

Sounds like you know your preferences. I don't own the 25mm for the same reason, want something a little more wide. The 20mm doesn't focus as fast. It's been by goto lens for years. I really like, but there are times I wished it would focus faster. I bought the Olympus 17mm f1.8 a few weeks ago. I like it a lot. From the technical reviews it may not be as sharp as the 20mm, but I find it's just fine in prints. It focuses very fast. I like the manual focus mode for zone focusing, stop down to f4-f11 and get in the range I want. If the money doesn't scare you you off it's my recommendation without knowing what exactly you shoot.

very interesting, especially that you own both lenses

I did not read any reviews of the 17mm f1.8 yet, do you have any links for me to look at ?

Have you personally experienced that it is not as sharp or is it just what you have heard

Someone raised the issue of purple fringing with wides on the OM-D. Have you experienced this ?

I own the 7-14 and 12/2 and had the 9-18 before. All three lenses may create the usual lens flare you'd xpect from a uwa/wa lens. On Oly cameras (not only the E-M5) the flare itself sometimes (not always) has a purple cast and some users also showed images where you cannot see a real flare but a kind of ugly purple blotch in the image. I have experienced the purple flare (no problem for me if i want lens flare in the image as an extra effect) but never had the purple blotch. But you'll have to try for yourself.

My 17/1.8 is ordered, there is one bad review (lenstip) but otherwise i liked what i saw. The images seem to have a certain character, not as razor sharp as the 70/1.8 or the 60/2.8 but sharp enough to look good.
