Film is now a niche product. Yes, many of us still remember the romance of seeing the image magically appear on silver halide paper, or the excitement of opening that envelope to see the images for the first time, unlike now, where the print is a somewhat anticlimactic step in the chain of creating an image. The earlier car and watch analogies are appreciated, however I think it might be more of a Walkman-to-Diskman-to-Ipod series of stages, which make looking back more of a view into our technological evolution, rather than a practical comparison between current technologies du jour. Because it's a niche, Polaroid SX-70 has been somewhat revived, but at around $50US a pack, it's not going to regain mass appeal. Our wallets have spoken.

To be fair I think Instax has quietly been becoming a bit more than a niche, the 210 for example is at #55 on Amazon's sales chart, no doubt helped by the film being much cheaper than the impossible project.
