Good question and info I should have included in my original post.
I was using Dynamic 9.
With Dynamic 9 you get to decide which AF point to start using BUT the camera gets to decide which is ACTUALLY used. If you have a consistent problem switch to Single. You then get to decide both the initial and final AF point. Assuming your D600 works like my D800.
